Question: How Do I Get Into a Private School?

There are several ways you can get into private school. Most people get in by getting good scores on the SSAT/ISEE tests, interviewing well and submitting good recommendations from their former school. Some have relatives who attended the school. Bottom line is simple: you must be able to do the academic work and fit into the school community.

Answer: By offering the school credentials which match its requirements.

You need to read carefully what the school expects of its applicants. Review the material on the school's Web site carefully. The school will usually lay out its philosophy pretty clearly. If you are not in tune with that, there's not much point in applying. Another useful resource is an educational consultant. He will have up to date information on schools' current acceptance practices and much more. His services are not free, but he will save you lots of time.

Back to credentials. If you are applying to Grade 10 which is what most people do, then the school will want to see certified transcripts of your previous three years academic work. It will also require recommendations from key teachers such as your English and math teachers. What is the school looking for? Gaps in your learning, your achievements, but most of all, your preparedness for the rigorous academic work any good private school offers.

Standardized admissions testing is one of the assessment tools most private schools use. Taking the SSAT/ISEE in late fall is part of the drill.

Next you need to visit the school - you can even spend a day or an overnight at many schools - and meet with the admissions staff for an interview.

If you have relatives who have attended or are presently attending the school, you will be considered a legacy. A legacy almost always gets preferential treatment simply because the school knows the family.

The most important part of getting in to a private school is to match what you offer with what the school is looking for. Get that right and you will also achieve a 'good fit'. Isn't that what you really are looking for anyway? Your child's happiness is at stake.
