Set in or about Private Schools

By Robert Kennedy, About.com

I always choke up when I see Dead Poets' Society. I fill with rage at the anti-semetic prejudice in School Ties. This selection of films spans several decades.

Be sure to send me your favorite so I can add it to the list.

Chasing Holden (2001)

"High school misfit Neil Lawrence (DJ Qualls, ROAD TRIP) is sent to a prestigious boarding school by his New York Governor father in an effort to put him on the path to success. But when Neil meets beautiful, wild teenager T.J. (Rachel Blanchard), he finds a more than adequate partner in crime."

Dead Poets Society (1989)

"An unconventional New England prep school teacher inspires his students with poetry and encourages them to embrace life." Robin Williams in another superb performance.

The Emperor's Club (2002)

My review of this film is colored very much by my own love of the classics, and, of course, private schools. Kevin Kline is very convincing as Mr. Hundert. While cliches abound, it is still an enjoyable movie with the usual sort of moralizing about cheating and its consequences. The secondary theme of moving with the times is also a powerful one. Headmasters no longer fit the Mr. Chips mold, but need to be fund raisers and CEO's of the vast enterprise which is a private school. ***

Finding Forrester (2000)

Gus Van Sant and Sean Connery make this inspirational film quite unforgettable.

Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939)

"Based on the novel by James Hilton, GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS is the story of a shy English schoolmaster who dedicates his life to his boys." This is the classic version of James Hilton's novel.

Harry Potter Collection

Contains three Harry Potter movies: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone; Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Askaban.

The Lords of Discipline (1983)

"Will is a senior at the Carolina Military Institute (circa 1964), in which a secret society called "The Ten" conduct tortuous hazing practices on new recruits. He is assigned to protect Pearce, the first black entrant into the racially-biased student body. After narrowly rescuing Pearce from castration by "The Ten", Will is determined to reveal the group members' identities. His actions lead him to a cover-up at the highest levels of the academy."

Outside Providence (1999)

Your basic B movie. Pothead gets sent to private school by daddy in an attempt to straighten him out. Pretty predictable plot. The best thing about this film is Alec Baldwin.

School Ties (1992)

"A working-class teenager receives a football scholarship to an elite New England prep school and enjoys acceptance as the team hero--until his classmates discover he is Jewish." Matt Damon stars in a movie which depicts the way prep schools used to be.

Taps (1981)

"A dedicated and honor bound young cadet takes up arms to prevent his military school from being closed." A 21 year old Timothy Hutton is joined by an equally young Sean Penn and screen legend George C. Scott.
